Spent the evening mapping every dot in the wallpaper we shipped last spring. Turns out the density curve, not the colour, is what made it feel calm.
The short version: spacing grows on a curve while dot size stays flat. Your eye reads the field as settling rather than fading. Full breakdown and the source file in #quietinterfaces.
The density read is right. We tried the same thing with opacity and it just looked faded.
Saving this for the studio review on Thursday. Does the curve hold on a dark background?
It does, if you drop the dot size by about eight per cent and leave the spacing alone.
Ran the numbers on that — posting the comparison tonight.
